Jacob Welsh's Malawi Experience
Excerpts from Jacobs Diary….April 17th
…….after 6½ hours we arrived at Kande Village. Kids chased after the car, some jumped on the back. When we got out everyone was touching me, trying to shake my hand and asking my name. I played soccer with them. The ball they use is made with heaps of plastic bags tied together with string, it is actually a pretty good ball because it doesn’t hurt your feet. But there feet must be so tough because the sand is so hot and they don’t seem to mind.
Dad cooked some rice and pumpkin for tea – I was hungry so I pretended that it was one of Grandad’s bbq’s. When it was dark we went to bed and I could hear all the boys who sleep on the beach talking out on the sand by the lake.
(following day)
……..after breakfast I run down to the lake, of course everyone else followed and after taking off all their clothes jumped in. I got out and went to the fire where they are cooking rats, mice and 2 inch long fish. They offer me some, but I wasn’t hungry! I got back to our house and suddenly I was hungry so I made a sandwich, with no cheese…..
We met some little girls. One called Wezzie, she was crying. Robyn said that she was showing symptoms of malaria, but were not sure what the sickness was. She fell asleep in the sand. Dad took her to her mum. We didn’t hear anymore that day – hope she is okay.
